Experience Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Athens to Mycenae, Epidaurus & Nafplio
Your grand journey begins. Cross the Corinth Canal into the Peloponnese and step back in time at Mycenae — the powerful citadel of Agamemnon that dominated the Bronze Age Aegean. Continue to the Theatre of Epidaurus, where a whisper at center stage carries to the last row. Settle into Nafplio for the evening — explore the old town, climb to Akronafplia, or simply enjoy dinner by the waterfront.
Sparta & the Byzantine Jewel of Mystras
Drive south through the Arcadian mountains into Laconia — the heartland of the Spartans. Visit the archaeological remains of ancient Sparta and the excellent local museum. Then climb to Mystras, the hauntingly beautiful Byzantine fortress city that flourished as a center of art and learning in the 13th–15th centuries. Its frescoed churches and palace ruins, set against the Taygetus mountains, are among Greece's most memorable sights.
Across the Peloponnese to Olympia
Travel west through the mountainous interior of the Peloponnese, passing through villages and valleys that few tourists ever see. Arrive at Ancient Olympia — where the Olympic tradition was born. Explore the ancient stadium, the Temple of Zeus (which once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), and the comprehensive archaeological museum. A peaceful evening in the town of Olympia rounds off the day.
Across the Gulf to Delphi
Cross the Gulf of Corinth via the dramatic Rion-Antirion suspension bridge and continue north to Delphi — the navel of the ancient world. Explore the sanctuary of Apollo, where the Oracle dispensed prophecies that altered the course of history. Visit the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theatre, the stadium, and the outstanding museum. Spend the afternoon in the mountain village of Arachova — famous for its stone architecture, local textiles, and traditional cuisine.
Meteora, Thermopylae & Return to Athens
The final day brings the most visually dramatic destination of the entire tour. Drive north to Meteora, where monasteries built in the 14th–16th centuries crown towering sandstone pillars that rise 400 meters above the plain. Visit 2–3 monasteries, take in the panoramic viewpoints, and enjoy lunch in Kalambaka. On the return journey, stop at Thermopylae — the narrow coastal pass where King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans made their legendary stand against the Persian army. Arrive back in Athens by evening.
Historical Significance
The Grand Tour of Greece traces the entire arc of mainland Greek civilization — from the Bronze Age citadels of Mycenae, through the classical ideals of Sparta and Olympia, to the spiritual authority of Delphi and the Byzantine splendor of Mystras and Meteora. The stop at Thermopylae adds the legendary chapter of Greek resistance that has inspired military and political history for 2,500 years.
No other single tour covers so many layers of history, spanning from 1600 BCE to the 16th century CE, across such varied and spectacular landscapes. This is Greece distilled into five unforgettable days.
